1752-1840. English novelist and diarist, daughter of the musician Dr Charles Burney (1726-1814). She achieved success with Evelina, published anonymously 1778, became a member of Dr Johnson's circle, received a post at court from Queen Charlotte, and in 1793 married the emigre Gen d'Arblay. She published three further novels, Cecilia 1782, Camilla 1796, and The Wanderer 1814, and her diaries and letters appeared in 1842.
