1842-1885. English soldier, traveller, and founder of the weekly critical journal Vanity Fair. He travelled to Spain, Sudan, and Russian Asia during his leave from the Horse Guards. His books include A Ride to Khiva 1876 and On Horseback through Asia Minor 1877. Burnaby joined the British Nile expedition to relieve General Gordon, under seige in Khartoum, Sudan, and was killed in action at the battle of Abu Klea.
