1820-1861. Australian explorer who made the
first south-north crossing of Australia (from
Victoria to the Gulf of Carpentaria), with
William Wills (1834-61). Both died on the
return journey, and only one of their party
survived. He was born in Galway, Ireland, and
became a police inspector in the goldfields
of Victoria.
