1900-1983. Spanish Surrealist film director.
He collaborated with Salvador Dali in Un
Chien andalou 1928, and established his solo
career with Los Olvidados/The Young and the
Damned 1950. His works are often
anticlerical, with black humour and erotic
imagery. Later films include Le Charme
discret de la bourgeoisie/The Discreet Charm
of the Bourgeoisie 1972 (Academy Award
winner) and Cet Obscur Objet du desir/That
Obscure Object of Desire 1977.
