Incident in Anglo-Indian history: according
to tradition, the nawab (ruler) of Bengal
confined 146 British prisoners on the night
of 20 June 1756 in one small room, of whom
only 23 allegedly survived. Later research
reduced the death count to 43, assigning
negligence rather than intention.
