Biological oxygen demand, (BOD) The amount of
dissolved oxygen taken up by microorganisms
in a sample of water. Since these
microorganisms live by decomposing organic
matter, and the amount of oxygen used is
proportional to their number and metabolic
rate, BOD can be used as a measure of the
extent to which the water is polluted with
organic compounds.
