1839-1865. US actor and fanatical Confederate
sympathizer who assassinated President
Abraham Lincoln 14 Apr 1865; he escaped with
a broken leg and was later shot in a barn in
Virginia when he refused to surrender. He had
earlier conceived a plan to kidnap Lincoln
and decided to kill him in vengeance when the
plan failed.
