1885-1962. Danish physicist. After work with
Ernest Rutherford at Manchester, he became
professor at Copenhagen in 1916, and founded
there the Institute of Theoretical Physics of
which he became director in 1920. Nobel prize
1922. He fled from the Nazis in World War II
and took part in work on the atomic bomb in
the USA. In 1952, he helped to set up CERN,
the
European nuclear research organization, in
Geneva.
