English film actor, who appeared in comedies
and adventure films such as Doctor in the
House 1954 and Campbell's Kingdom 1957,
before acquiring international recognition
for complex roles in films such as The
Servant 1963 and Accident 1967, made with
director Joseph Losey, and Luchino Visconti's
Death in Venice 1971. He has also written
autobiographical books and novels, for
example A Postillion Struck by Lightning
1977, Snakes and Ladders 1978, Orderly Man
1983, and Backcloth 1986.
