1797-1878. Italian ballet teacher of French
extraction. He was successful as a dancer in
Paris and in Milan, where he established a
dancing school in 1837. His celebrated
treatise on the art of dancing, Traite
elementaire, theoretique et pratique de l'art
de la danse 1820, forms the basis of
classical dance training.
