1936- . British explorer and soldier. His
expeditions have included the first descent
and exploration of the Blue Nile 1968; the
journey N to S from Alaska to Cape Horn,
crossing the Darien Gap between Panama and
Colombia for the first time 1971-72; and the
first complete navigation of the Zaire River,
Africa 1974-75. From 1963 he organized
adventure training at Sandhurst military
academy. He was director of Operation Drake
1977-81 and Operation Raleigh 1978-82. His
books include A Taste for Adventure 1978.
