Chief industrial and commercial centre of
Malawi, in the Shire highlands; population
(1985) 355,000. It produces tea, coffee,
rubber, tobacco, and textiles. It was formed
by the union of the towns of Blantyre (named
after the explorer Livingstone's birthplace)
and Limbe in 1959.
