Addison, Joseph 1672-1719. English writer. In 1704 he celebrated Marlborough's victory at Blenheim in a poem, `The Campaign', and subsequently held political appointments, including under-secretary of state and secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland 1708. In 1709 he contributed to the Tatler, begun by Richard Steele, with whom he was co- founder in 1711 of the Spectator. Subject by: Russell Webb
