Adams, Gerry (Gerard) 1948- .
Northern Ireland politician, president of
Provisional Sinn Fein (the political wing of
the IRA). He was elected a member of
Parliament 1983 but declined to take up his
Westminster seat. He has been criticized for
failing to denounce IRA violence. In the
1970s, because of his connections with the
IRA, he was interned and later released.
