Society founded 1725 by Catherine the Great
in St Petersburg (now called Leningrad). The
academy has been responsible for such
achievements as the Sputnik satellite, and
has branches in the Ukraine (welding,
cybernetics), Armenia (astrophysics), and
Georgia (mechanical engineering).
