Founded 1939 as `Ballet Theater' with 
co-directors Lucia Chase and Richard 
Pleasant, then from 1945 Oliver Smith.
Aiming to present established and new 
ballets with frequent celebrity guest
appearances, they established a repertoire of
exemplary range and quality.
