Rare syndrome, generally present from birth,
characterized by a withdrawn state and a 
failure to develop normally in language or
social behaviour, although the autistic child
may show signs of high intelligence in other
areas, such as music.  Many have impaired 
intellect, however, and the causes may range
from brain damage to heredity.
