A children's story by Lewis Carroll,
published 1865. Alice dreams she follows the
White Rabbit down a rabbit-hole and meets
fantastic characters such as the Cheshire
Cat, the Mad Hatter, and the King and Queen
of Hearts. An Alice-in-Wonderland situation
has come to mean an absurd or irrational
situation, because of the dreamlike logic of
Alice's adventures in the book. With its
companion volume Through the Looking-Glass
1872, it is one of the most quoted works in
the English language.
