Alembert, Jean le Rond d' 1717-1783. French
mathematician and encyclopedist. He was
associated with Diderot in planning the great
Encyclopedie. Born in Paris, he was educated
by the Jansenist Catholic sect. He studied
law and medicine before devoting himself to
mathematics.
