Rule developed by Andre Ampere connecting the 
direction of an electic current and its 
associated magnetic currents. Travelling 
along a current-carrying wire in the 
direction of the current (from the positive 
to the negative terminal of a battery), and 
facing a magnetic needle, the north pole of 
the needle is deflected to the left-hand 
side.
