Scottish historical painter, born in
Edinburgh, who spent several years in Russia
and neighbouring countries, and returned to
Edinburgh in 1814. He was elected president
of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1838. His
paintings include scenes from Walter Scott's
Waverley novels.
