S, between 160 degrees  E and 45 degrees  
E longitude, excluding Adelie Land; area
6,044,000 sq km/2,332,984 sq mi of land and
75,800 sq km/29,259 sq mi of ice shelf.
The population on the Antarctic continent is
limited to research personnel. There are 
scientific bases at Mawson (1954) in 
MacRobertson Land, named after the explorer;
at Davis (1957) on the coast of Princess 
Elizabeth Land, named in honour of Mawson's
second-in-command; at Casey (1969) in Wilkes
Land, named after Lord Casey; and at 
Macquarie Island (1948).  It came into being
1933, when established by a British Order in
Council.
