Abel, Frederick Augustus 1827-1902. British
scientist and inventor who developed
explosives. As a chemist to the War
Department, he introduced a method of making
gun-cotton and was joint inventor with James
Dewar of cordite. He also invented the Abel
close-test instrument for determining the
flash point (ignition temperature) of
petroleum.
