Beuys, Joseph 1921-1986. German sculptor and
performance artist, one of the leaders of
avantgarde art in Europe during the 1970s and
1980s. His sculpture makes use of unusual
materials such as felt and fat. He was
strongly influenced by his wartime
experiences.
