Berzelius, Jons Jakob 1779-1848. Swedish
chemist, whose accurate determination of
atomic and molecular weights helped to
establish the laws of combination and the
atomic theory. He invented (1813-14) the
system of chemical symbols now in use and did
valuable work on catalysts.
