Bertolucci, Bernardo 1940- . Italian film
director, whose work combines political and
historical perspectives with an elegant and
lyrical visual appeal. His films include The
Spider's Stratagem 1970, Last Tango in Paris
1972, The Last Emperor 1987, for which he
received an Academy Award, and The Sheltering
Sky 1990. He is regarded as one of the most
talented of the younger generation of Italian
film directors. Among his other films are The
Conformist 1970 and 1900 1976.
