Bernard of Menthon, St, (or Bernard of
Montjoux) 923-1008. Alpine passes that bear
his name. The large, heavily built St Bernard
dogs, formerly employed to find travellers
lost in the snow, were also named after him.
He is the patron saint of mountaineers. Feast
day 28 May.
