author. He established his reputation as a
master of supernatural and psychological
horror with his Tales of Soldiers and
Civilians 1891 and Can Such Things Be? 1893.
He also wrote The Devil's Dictionary 1906, a
collection of ironic definitions. He
disappeared on a secret mission to Mexico.
