Bazalgette, Joseph 1819-1890. British civil engineer who, as Chief Engineer to the London Board of Works, designed London's sewer system, a total of 155 km/83 mi of sewers, covering an area of 256 sq km/100 sq mi. It was completed 1865. He also designed the Victoria Embankment 1864-70, which was built over the river Thames and combined a main sewer, a water frontage, an underground railway, and a road.
