Bayle, Pierre 1647-1706. French critic and
philosopher. He was suspended from the chair
of philosophy at Rotterdam under suspicion of
religious scepticism in 1693. Three years
later his Dictionnaire historique et critique
appeared, which influenced among others the
French Encyclopedists.
