Basov, Nikolai Gennadievich 1912- . Soviet
physicist who in 1953, with his compatriot
Aleksandr Prokhorov, developed the microwave
amplifier called a maser. They were awarded
the Nobel Prize for Physics 1964, which they
shared with Charles Townes of the USA.
