Bashkirtseff, Marie 1860-1884. Russian
diarist and painter whose journals, written
in French, were cited by Simone de Beauvoir
as the archetypal example of `self-centered
female narcissism', but which also revealed
the discovery by the female of her
independent existence. She died of
tuberculosis at 24.
