Barrie, J(ames) M(atthew) 1860-1937. Scottish
playwright and novelist, author of The
Admirable Crichton 1902 and the children's
fantasy Peter Pan 1904. He became known by
his studies of Scottish rural life in plays
such as A Window in Thrums 1889, which began
the vogue of the Kailyard school. His
reputation as a playwright was established
with The Professor's Love Story 1894 and The
Little Minister. His later plays include
Quality Street 1901 and What Every Woman
Knows 1908.
