Barnes, Ernest William 1874-1953. British
cleric. A lecturer in mathematics at
Cambridge 1902-15, he was an ardent advocate
of the significance of scientific thought on
religion. In 1924 he became bishop of
Birmingham; he published The Rise of
Christianity 1947.
