Barenboim, Daniel 1942- . Israeli pianist and conductor, born in Argentina. Pianist/conductor with the English Chamber Orchestra from 1964, he became conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra 1970 and musical director of the Orchestre de Paris 1975. Appointed artistic director of the Opera Bastille, Paris, July 1987, he was fired from his post a few months before the Opera's opening in July 1989. He is a celebrated interpreter of Mozart and Beethoven.
