Barbirolli, John 1899-1970. English
conductor. He made his name as a cellist, and
in 1937 succeeded Toscanini as conductor of
the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He
returned to England in 1943, where he
remained conductor of the Halle Orchestra,
Manchester, until his death.
