Banda, Hastings Kamuzu c. 1902- . Malawi
politican, president from 1966. Banda studied
in the USA and was a doctor in Britain until
1953. He led his country's independence
movement, was prime minister of Nyasaland
(the former name of Malawi) from 1963, and
became the first president of the one-party
republic. His rule has been authoritarian,
and in 1971 he made himself life president.
