Baliol, John de c. 1250-1314. King of
Scotland 1292-96. As an heir to the Scottish
throne on the death of Margaret, the Maid of
Norway, his cause was supported by the
English king, Edward I, against 12 other
claimants. Having paid homage to Edward,
Baliol was proclaimed king but soon rebelled
and gave up the kingdom when English forces
attacked Scotland.
