Baker, Kenneth (Wilfrid), 1934 - British
Conservative politician, home secretary from
1990. He was environment secretary 1985-86,
education secretary 1986-89, and chair of the
Conservative Party 1989-90, retaining his
cabinet seat, before becoming home secretary
in John Major's government.

Undergoing national service in N Africa Baker
was, for a time, a gunnery instructor to the
Libyan army. He then read history at Oxford.
He was elected to the House of Commons in
1968 (representing Mole Valley from 1983).
Despite a reputation of being on the liberal
wing of the Conservative Party, he became a
minister of state in Thatcher's 1979
administration. Baker, Richard St Barbe
1889-1982. British forestry expert, founder
of the Men of the Trees Society, which in
1932 became worldwide. In 1959 he settled in
New Zealand.
