German founder of the monastic Catholic
Carthusian order. He was born in Cologne,
became a priest, and controlled the cathedral
school of Rheims 1057-76. Withdrawing to the
mountains near Grenoble after an
ecclesiastical controversy, he founded the
monastery at Chartreuse in 1084. Feast day 6
