1769-1849. British engineer and inventor, and
father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He
constructed the Rotherhithe tunnel under the
river Thames in London from Wapping to
Rotherhithe 1825-43. Born in France, he came
to England in 1799, did engineering work for
the Admiralty, and improved the port of
Liverpool.
