Port and naval base on the Adriatic, in
Puglia, on the heel of Italy; population
(1981) 90,000. Industries include food
processing and petrochemicals. It is one of
the oldest Mediterranean ports, at the end of
the Appian Way from Rome. The poet Virgil
died here 19 BC.
