Main help screen ================= <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< PLEASE NOTE >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> THIS PROGRAM IS SHAREWARE! READ THE DOCUMENTATION ON HOW TO REGISTER Genie is a computerised family history database. It allows you to store details of people, relationships, and marriage details. Each person can have an as many marriages and children as required (the only limit being disk space). You are allowed two extra fields both the personal and marriage files that can be configured to suit your needs. This help screen is available throughout the program and can be called, as you have already done, by just pressing on the help button on any of the screens. Over-view of main screen options ================================ The following are brief descriptions of the options available from the menu. Setup ------ This will setup a blank database with a name of your choice, ready for entering data. It is necessary that you setup a database before you can enter anything. Be careful that you do not erase any other file by mistake (you will be warned if this may be about to happen). The following are the files that will be created: .personfile (where is the name of your database) .personindex .marriagefile .newpersindex Preferences ------------ This will allow you to tailor the program to suit your own particular taste and requirements. From here you can change the extra field names and add or change any reasons for next marriages. You can also change the default family database (i.e the one that will be loaded for you when this program is first run) and you can also put the person index into ram (or another device of your choice). About ------ This will give details of the version number and the authors name. Add & Amend ------------ This will be the main screen where you enter any information that you have for your family tree. Re-make index -------------- This option should only be used when, for some reason, the person index has been corrupted or destroyed. This may occur if their is a power failure or if the computer is accidentaly turned off. The person index will be re-created by using the person file. When it is finished, it will then be sorted and saved. List-view ---------- This will allow you to produce a list of people that can be chosen with the mouse and also by using filters. The list can be sent to the screen, printer, or file. Pedigree --------- This will produce the traditional family history pedigree chart. Output can be sent to screen, printer, or file. Family group ------------- This will produce a listing for a family group (a husband, wife, and their children). Output can be to screen, printer, or file. Descendants ------------ This will produce a listing which shows peoples relationships to each other. It is similar to a 'true' family tree diagram, but is in the form of list. Dump list ---------- From here you can dump the marriage file, person index, and child index to the screen, printer, or file. Backup & recovery ------------------ This will allow you to make backups of your database and recover them if your original gets corrupted.
