This package gives you the ability to use the new Filesystems under OS2 ! [-]---------------------------------------------------------------------[-] *** WHATS NEW ? *** OS1.x+ DOS\0 = OldFileSystem Sector=488 Bytes OS1.x+ DOS\1 = FastFileSystem Sector=512 Bytes OS2.x+ DOS\2 = OldFileSystem International Mode Sector=488 Bytes OS2.x+ DOS\3 = FastFileSystem International Mode Sector=512 Bytes OS3.x+ DOS\4 = OldFileSystem Directory Caching Sector=488 Bytes OS3.x+ DOS\5 = FastFileSystem Directory Caching Sector=512 Bytes That's history now ! DOS\4-DOS\5 are normaly available under OS3+ only ! But with the delivered FastFileSystem,HDToolBox and Format you can use it with all Kickstarts since 1.3 (And also that fake auto-mounters under 1.2 But you have to kick OS2 at least once to install the thing with HDToolBox & Format ! But it works !) [-]---------------------------------------------------------------------[-] *** WHY SHOULD I USE IT ? *** You dont know why you should use DOS\5 ? Simple: If you are using a harddisk which contains many files, you know how long it takes to read a directory. Even with a accelerated Amiga it takes it's time ! Just imagine a BBS with a 1.8 GigaByte HD, reading a Directory which contains about 2000 Files will take a very long time . Here comes the DC-FS (DirectoryCaching FileSystem) which speeds up the thing a lot ! Why ? The old FFS creates for each file a sector which contains the fileheader (name,length,date,comment,protection bits). The DC-FS uses sectors which contains fileheaders only. Therefore it can hold 12 upto 16 fileheaders in one sector so if you read a directory the HD reads one sector and gets 12-16 files. Thats why it will be enormous faster ! If you still have the experience that your Directory Opus is soooo sloooow reading directories, then have a look in the configuration under OPERATION and there under LIST FORMAT. Make shure that you dont display FILE TYPE on boths windows ! Because when you select this DOPUS have to read at least the first (and maybe more) block of each file, so we are back to old lameness ! [-]---------------------------------------------------------------------[-] *** HOW DO I INSTALL THE THING ? *** NOTE: At this place I must tell you that ALL data on your HD will be lost therefore I recommend to make a backup first ! If you are using Kickstart 1.3 you have to kick OS2 because HDToolBox and the Format command requires it. Copy the FastFileSystem to your L: directory, replace your Format against the new one. Do that on a stand-alone WB-Disk if you want to re-format your boot-partition. Then load HDToolBox: Shell: Usage: HDToolBox [driver.device] [MaxID] [MaxLUN] [XT.device] Eg: HDToolBox gvpscsi.device (Using MaxID and MaxLUN just speeds up reading driveinformation but are not necassary. If you are using XT devices MaxID and MaxLUN are senseless) WBench: Click on the icon and enter the following tooltypes: SCSI_DEVICE_NAME,SCSI_MAX_ADDRESS,SCSI_MAX_LUN Save the changes and double click the icon. Eg: SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=gvpscsi.device (Using SCSI_MAX_ADDRESS and SCSI_MAX_LUN just speeds up reading driveinformation but are not necassary. If you are using XT devices SCSI_MAX_ADDRESS and SCSI_MAX_LUN are senseless) NOTE: We added a patched version for all the masses of GVP (Yeah #1 !) users, so that they can use the GVPHDToolBox directly. Now as you are in the HDToolBox select the desired drive you wish to update. Push the "Partition Drive" Button. Enable the "Advanced Options". Some more menus appear. Go into "Add/Update...". Then select "Add New File System..." and just press "Ok" (I presume the FastFileSystem IS in the L: dir now !) and change the DosType to 0x44f5305 ! (Version should be 40 and revision 1 if not, check if you really copied the right FastFileSystem !). Again select "Ok" and you will see that the new FileSystem appears. NOTE: Maybe there is already a FileSystem. You can delete this ! There should be no problem ! Maybe you have to delete it before installing the new one. Don't worry ! Again you push "Ok" and you are back in the partition window. Select "Change..." and enable the "Directory Cache". NOTE: If you are using DOS\4 or DOS\5 (Directory Caching),International Mode will be automatically selected. "Ok" two times again and then "Save Changes to Drive". It will tell you that data will be destroyed on the partition. If you still have no backup, this is your last chance. Select "Continue" and that's it ! The new filesystem is installed ! NOTE: If you have more than one drive you only have to have a FileSystem on the first drive ! All others can be deleted ! This FS will work for DOS\0 to DOS\5 ! Every other FS just eats up your memory ! When you "Exit" now it will tell you that you have to reboot to make your changes take effect (and it will reboot on "Continue"). DO THAT ! Because formatting can only be made under that new FileSystem and that is loaded after reset. Now boot normally or your WB-Disk if it was your boot-partition you re-organized. Double-Click on the Format icon or go to shell. WBench: Click on the desired drive and "Continue". Edit the volume name and enable "Directory Cache". You can disable "Put Trashcan" if you don't use it. Click on "Quick Format" if the drive already was formatted once before (you only have to "Format" it if it is a new and never formatted drive). Shell: Type FORMAT DRIVE XYZ: NAME TEST FFS DIRCACHE NOICONS QUICK XYZ: is your drive. TEST should be the desired name. FFS is a must *:) and DIRCACHE also. NOICONS disables the Thrashcan. Do not use QUICK when the drive is never formatted before. NOTE: If you are using DOS\4 or DOS\5 (Directory Caching),International Mode will be automatically selected. That's it ! The drive is now working with the new FileSystem. Copy back your data and enjoy the speed ! [-]---------------------------------------------------------------------[-] *** DISADVANTAGES *** Well, you guessed that there is a trap ? Yes, but only for old software that is unable to handle the DC-FS ! Eg. you are still using Kickstart 1.x ALL tools will fail to repair DC-FS disks ! We included the latest DiskSalv by Dave Haynie which is running under OS2.x+ and can handle DC-FS. Also the best disk optimizer does not work under DC-FS (ReOrg V2.33). But who needs to optimize such a perfect FileSystem ? :-) The creating of files is a little bit slower (Just a little ! *:) because the dos have to reorder the directory caches. Validating the drive takes a longer time but try reading a directory and you will shurely forget that little bugger !
