M A K E B R O T ----------------- (C) D.Odd 1992 INTRODUCTION ------------ This isn't just a normal run of the mill mandelbrot generator.. Oh no. It's slow and can only generate fractals 256*256 pixels. BUT!!!! It can also.... i) Produce Julia sets. ii) Print data in EIGHT different ways (inc. 3D!!) iii) Produce DEM files for inclusion in 'Strata' and 'Vista' iv) Modify the 3D design. v) Er... That's it. When you run it it will first calculate the 'base' Mandelbrot in steps of massive 10 pixels. So first of all I'll deal with the display options. DISPLAY ------- Once a display is calculated go through the following steps... a) Choose from menu 3 'DISTANCE' or 'ITERATIONS' this controls the way that the colours are choosen from the data. i) If you choose 'DISTANCE' select from menu 2 ethier 'SQR' or 'NORM' These also change the way the colours are chosen. b) Next choose (from menu 2) the amount of times you want the program to cycle through the colours. When this is done (or the options don't need changing) select from menu 3.. i) Colour - Produces colour plot ii) B&W - Produces Black and white plot iii) Landscape - Produces 3D plot. N.B This options automatically uses the 'DISTANCE' setting. Can only be chosen with 'brots of step 1 or 2. ---> Hey Presto... A wonderful fractal. GENERATING A NEW ONE -------------------- Now lets produce a new one. First of all we need to select the methods used. a) In menu 2 select... i) Iterations - The more iterations the slower it takes. Produces more detail when you get in close. N.B 'DISTANCE' pictures don't vary much with different values. ii) Size. Size 1 is (256*256), size 2 if (128*128) etc. Obviously the more detailed the slower. N.B Must be size 1 or 2 for a 3D print. Must be size 1 to save a DEM file. b) In menu 1 are a number of options.. i) PARENT will reprint the parent mandel/julia picture. ii) Go! will calculate a picture of a selected area. To select the area JUST BEFORE selecting Go! move your mouse onto the screen and drag a box around the bit of the 'brot you want to 'zoom' in on. iii) Re-Print will re-calculate the currant fractal, with the new options (see (a) above) Finaly you can toggle between Julia and mandelbrot sets. To calculate a Julia set simply click on the picture at the selected point and then choose JULIA from menu 4. Each point has it's own Julia set. You can then voom in, etc to your hearts content. Selecting MANDELBROT will bring you back to the brot you started with. 3D Plots -------- You can save the mandelbrot/julia as a DEM file. This file can then be loaded into a number of Landscape generating programs and messed about with. (Programs include Strata, Vista, Terraform, Genesis (I think)) N.B A demo version of Strata can be bought in the P.D scene. THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT DEM FILES. The complete version can be obtained be sending me a cheque made payable to D.Odd, for the small sum of £5. (Also includes many other programs) Within the program you can modify the data in two ways. Both options are found on the end menu. ROUGHEN - This does what it says - It roughens the landscape - makes it more random. INVERT - This flips the landscape so that hill are valleys avnd vice versa. Strata allows you to invert/scale the landscape within the program. Vista doesn't - so make sure it's the way you want it when saving out. Hint - I don't find putting the iterations above 32 improves the landscape at all - Sometimes it makes it worst. That's it.
