GENERAL NOTES

 After arrival in Sydney Cove 
 Governor King inspected the
 ship. After inspecting the log he
 gave orders that John Beeby and
 James Fennell (the 2 crew members
 who had caused trouble during the
 voyage) be given 45 lashes.

 Gov.King later wrote commending
 Capt.Sterling & Surgeon Throsby
 for their efforts. Part of this
 letter states :-
 
 " nor ought I omit the pleasure
 I & other visiting felt at the
 general thankfulness & gratitude
 every prisoner expressed for your
 care & kind attention to them
 during the voyage."

 Rev.John MGarvie later told of how
 George Hall had approached Gov.King
 on board & asked permission for the
 settlers to be allowed to stay 
 together in the colony; and how the
 Governor, although taken aback, did
 agree to this request & issued his
 orders to that effect the next day.

 Speed Comparisons:
 
 From the inception of the Sydney to
 Hobart yacht race in 1945 until 1983
 the average speed of the winners was
 6.65 knots (for approx.600 miles).
 
 On 3 seperate occasions during her
 voyage the Coromandel (fully laden)
 covered over 600 miles during 3 day
 periods averaging over 9 knots - or
 35% faster than modern race yachts.
