Hack & Slash, v2.2 DOS Pfile; CNet Install Docs by Dotoran
============================================================================

What you have in this archive is the following:

        - The v2.1 Hack & Slash Files.
        - The v2.1 UPDATE Hack & Slash Files.
        - The v2.2 UPDATE Hack & Slash Files.
        - A modified version "H&S.boot" Arexx file.
        - This CNet Installation Text File.

I took all the available H&S files and used only those that were needed
to get H&S working on CNet v3.05c. There are no EARLIER version H&S files
within this archive. Hopefully, this will stop you from having to download
numerous 3-400 K H&S archives.

Here are the steps needed to get H&S up and running on CNet 3.05c:

1: To make this installation as easy as possible, please follow these docs
to the letter. Don't mess with trying to store the files somewhere else
unless your familiar with the files in question. To start, copy the H&S
directory and the H&S.boot files into your PFILES: root directory. These
docs will assume the H&S directory is nowhere other than in PFILES: and
the H&S.boot is also located there...

2: You need to create an "HS2" Environment variable that will hold the full
pathname to the game files. This "variable" is simply a one line text
file named "HS2" (minus the quotes) that you should create and place in
your ENV: path(the one that gets loaded into RAM: when you first boot
the system). In this ONE LINE text file, place this line of info:

                        DH1:CNET/PFILES/H&S/

This line may need to be edited if your PFILES: are located elsewhere. It
is NOT a good idea to use the PFILES: assign here, as the ENV variables
are loaded BEFORE the CNET: assigns are made, so you should make this
line the FULL path to the H&S directory, REMEMBERING the final slash (/).

Using either 2.04 or 2.1 AmigaDOS, the files I created were stored in:

        DH0:PREFS/ENV-ARCHIVE/HS2
        RAM:ENV/HS2

I copied the file into the RAM:ENV/ directory, so I wouldn't have to
reboot the system, however from now on, the "HS2" file will automatically
be placed in the RAM:ENV/ directory whenever you boot up your Amiga.

I included a copy of the HS2 text file, in the event you'd rather just
COPY the file to the above two directories, instead of having to create
   it on your own.

3: Next, you need to tell the computer the "HSserver" file should be loaded
whenever CNet is loaded. This can be done in one of two ways:

A: If your using 2.+ DOS, you can simply place the "HSserver" file
into your "WBStartup" drawer, or you can choose to do B below...

B: If your not using 2.+ DOS, or you wish not to place the file in
your WBStartup drawer, you should add the following line in one
of your "startup" files. I suggest either the CNet-startup file,
if you use that, or the user-startup file if you don't:

                    run >nil: <nil: pfiles:H&S/HSserver

NOTE: Make sure this command appears AFTER you have your CNet
Amiga Assigns. By this, I mean make sure the command
appears AFTER your PFILES: designation has been assigned.

NOTE: You should also enter the above command into a CLI shell
window if you wish NOT to have to reboot your system in
                 order to play the game.

4: The next item of business is to use the CONFIG program located within the
H&S directory. You should run this program from a CLI Shell window ONLY!
Open a CLI, enter the H&S/ directory, then type CONFIG and hit RETURN.

NOTE: It will SEEM as though it is possible to add this file as a DOS
pfile within your pfiles section, however the file will NOT work
correctly to edit the needed data. In fact, it will come up looking
as if no previous data had been entered, and when you go through
the time and effort to type the needed data in, then SAVE it, the
file DOES NOT save the values correctly. I've also tried adding it
as a "Raw Console Setup" dos-type, and that just results in you not
being able to enter keyboard input at all(however CONTROL-C will
break you out of the program), so stick with the above method.

Also, I WAS able to use CNet's internal shell to run the program
without any problems, so you may wish to use the SH command from
within CNet proper, instead of opening a separate shell window.

The only option which MUST be done now is number 1. I'll let you explore
the other options at your leisure. Option 1, "BBS Setup" will ask you
numerous questions as to the PATHS of certain data and about the Message
areas you wish to define. Here are the paths to use if you stored the H&S
directory right in the PFILES: path...

                  email - pfiles:H&S/Email/
                   help - pfiles:H&S/Help/
                   menu - pfiles:H&S/Menu/
                    msg - pfiles:H&S/MSG/
                  notes - pfiles:H&S/Notes/
              arena pix - pfiles:H&S/Pix/Arena/
            dungeon pix - pfiles:H&S/Pix/Dungeon/
             player pix - pfiles:H&S/Pix/Player/

Answer the questions on the message bases whichever way you think will be
best for your own individual system. I'm running three bases myself, for
such things as Monster discussions, Magic discussions, etc.

The "HS.???" files included within this archive are those files which I
am presently using on Frontiers, however there values canall be changed
using the config program. Default values(my values) will be presented
within brackets( [ and ] ) when trying to edit the values, so you can
opt to just press RETURN to accept the given value if you wish.

5: When your done with # 4 above, SAVE your data using the "S" command. You
need not edit anything else in the CONFIG module now. You can experiment
with different settings later on, but now it's time to add H&S to CNet.

NOTE: One last time, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE CONFIG PROGRAM FROM WITHIN
YOUR PFILES. THIS WILL NOT WORK CORRECTLY! Launch it from either a
         CLI-Shell window, or using CNet's built-in "SH"ell. Enough said...

6: From within CNet's Pfile area, add the file "H&S.boot" as a Multi-Use
Arexx pfile. This file will take care of setting up two variables H&S
will need for its operation, as well as actually loading H&S. I slightly
modified the "H&S.boot" file that I obtained to send the users UID, also
known as their Serial ID Number. H&S will use this ID to determine which
user is playing H&S. By using the UID instead of the user's handle, it
is now possible for the user to change their handle on your bbs, yet still
be able to play H&S with their present account. Also, if an H&S player is
DELETED from your bbs, the next user that occupies that users account will
have to create their own account(instead of "inheriting" the previous
   players H&S stats.)

7: It will be necessary for the SysOp (ID#1) to enter H&S the first time, as
the MAINT access is only given to this player, who may then give it to
other players. After adding the above file, enter the H&S.boot program.

You will be asked four questions: your handle(or game alias), your sex,
your birthdate, and the terminal emulation you'd like to use. This info
need only be entered once for each new user.

Upon completion of these questions, you'll be taken into the game. Choose
a class, then distribute your points as you see fit. Soon, you should be
shown the Main Menu and the Main Prompt.

8: From the Main Prompt, type "@" (minus the quotes). You should be shown
the SysOp Menu. From this menu, select "U" for User File Editor. You'll
be asked to enter the player number to edit. Type "*" instead and press
   RETURN.

9: You'll be shown, yet another menu. The ONLY thing you should EVER change
on this screen is option # 8, the "reroll date". This is the date that
H&S will use to RESET the game. Set it for a month, or two months ahead
of the current date. You be the judge here. When your done, "S"ave the
date. You'll be taken back to the SysOp Menu.

10: That's it! Your all done! New Players may now begin to play the game!
H&S has built in "clean-up" routines to take care of dead players, etc,
so you needn't worry about trying to find an "amaint" type program for
H&S. To figure out the rest of the game, refer to the NUMEROUS help
files included in the game, or read the "HS.Docs" file inside the H&S
    directory.

Well, that should do it. I believe you shouldn't have any problems if
you followed the above steps, but if you do, let me know and I'll try
to walk you through the setup.
                                                                    Dotoran
