* SALYUT-7 NEWS *

The abandoned Soviet space station Salyut-7 is losing altitude rapidly
and is expected to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere shortly.  Salyut-7
was launched on 19-Apr-82 from the USSR, and its orbit has dropped
125 kilometers in altitude in the past year.  The following chart
illustrates the rapid decay of Salyut-7:

Salyut-7 carries an object number of 13138 and has been heard transmitting
telemetry on a frequency of 19.954 MHz.  COSMOS 1686 (object 16095) is
also in a similar orbit and is expected to decay with Salyut-7.

A good approximation for predicting the re-entrance date for Salyut-7 is
given by the formula:

Epoch + (16.666666 - Mean Motion) / (Decay Rate * 10)

This places the re-entrance date around 01Feb91.

* CRRES NEWS *

NASA will use the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES)
this month to study the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere.  CRRES will
release chemicals in space that will produce clouds of artifically injected
charged particles, which when illuminated by the sun, will produce brightly
colored patches in the night sky.  The patches should be about the size of
the full moon and be nearly as bright.

The releases should be visible from the entire continental US, most of
Canada, Central America, the Caribbean, and much of South America.  The
clouds may also be visible low in the western skies from western Africa
and Europe several hours before dawn.

A total of seven releases are planned, three in which lithium will produce
a red glow and four of barium, which will glow green and purple.  The release
opportunities will occur on the nights of January 10, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19,
21, 23, 24, and 25.  Exact times are tentative, but should occur around
8:45 PM EST.
