(1) I shall set a notional message size limit of 4k ie I shall ensure that no individual message exceeds that size. (2) Each message (where possible bearing in mind (1) above) I shall end each message on a byte three sub-net boundary. (3) I shall be distributing both HOSTS.NET and DOMAIN.TXT as I have received a similar number of requests for both. (4) Each distribution will take place four weeks apart, but HOSTS.NET and DOMAIN.TXT will be separated by two weeks in order to ease traffic flow. (5) At the end of each intervening week I shall send two messages, one a HOSTS.NET update (changes and new issues) and the other the same for DOMAIN.TXT. If any of you reading this bulletin have any comments or suggestions, I'd be very pleased to receive them. PLEASE check your entry in these files. It is now time to re-examine this for the following reasons. (1) The concept of RSGB region no longer exists (the RSGB operate within Zones which are different). (2) The growth of TCP/IP activity has meant that large number of stations are operating and some of the sub-nets are becoming unwieldy. (3) The split is very unbalanced as it takes no account of population density (eg 80+ stations in one region, none at all in others). (4) I have examined the world-wide DOMAIN.TXT and isolated subnets in other countries of the world and using an atlas, attempted to judge density of sub-nets. Ours seem to be rather large to say the least! (5) The software allows use of sub-net addressing at the bit level which could aid routing, broadcast addresses and the like. I therefore propose to restructure the addresses in the UK with the third byte based on COUNTY and to attempt to allocate values that start with low numbers in the south of the UK, growing to large values in the north. This will have several effects: the subnets will reduce in size; routing becomes easier; broadcast addresses likewise; the chances of each and every member of a sub-net being able to hear each other is considerably higher; allocation of addresses (ie determination of the third byte will be considerably easier); a lot of work for me! Finally, you'd all need to use new addresses. For those of you with tcp/ip access over the telephone line, I have put a small system on line, running the ka9q NOS package. On here I will try and keep the latest versions of NOS, and other tcp/ip related files & info. The system is running on an ibm-xt with 10mb hard drive, OS is MSdos 3.3, and running 900819 version of NOS, with the Russ Nelson, and pa0gri mods. There are not many outlets in the UK for obtaining this software, so I hope it will help some of you out a little! (its also cheaper than calling the st- ates for it!) Ok here are the details:- Tel Number is 0524-35853 Ip address is 44.131.1.87 {switch.g6phf.ampr.org} The easiest way to connect is to dial the number via your usual comms program i.e. telix,procomm etc. When you get connected, shell out of the program and bring up your version of NOS, NCSA etc, and then fire away! The modem will acc- pt speeds of 300-2400 baud. To login use USER 'anon' or 'guest' PASS 'your_callsign' In the public directory you will find the 'vanilla' versions of nos as NET_0822.exe for example. The pa0gri modified versions are NOSE0819.zip for the executable, and NOSS0819.zip for the sources, the figures are simply an abbriviation for the date.
