When the Royal Lahaina Golf Club was first open for play in 1962, there
were many admirers of the championship layout but there were others
that said the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design was too difficult for 
resort golfers. To resolve the problem, a par-three executive course
was built for high handicappers. A decade later, the layout was
expanded into a 18-hole par-72 course by Arthur Jack Synder. The 
course became the Royal Kaanapali South Course. The Royal Lahaina 
Golf Club became the Royal Kaanapali North Course.

The South Course is much shorter than the North Course and the emphasis
is on accuracy rather than long drives. The layout is traditional with
four par-3s, ten par-4s and 4 par-5s.

The trees on this course - mostly banyans, coconut palms and kiawe - 
were borrowed largely from Scott Chesney who may have borrowed some of
them from Jay Johnson. For those who may be loading this course as 
their first course other than those obtained through Accolade, you
should look for JNUG courses designed by Scott and Jay. They are
masterpieces in JNUG design. You can find them on the Accolade Bulletin
Board (408-296-8800). The Augusta course done by Scott and the Kiele
Course by Jay are particularly recommended. They also can be found on
Channel1, Exec-PC, Rusty N' Edie and other BBSs.
